Stoke and Lichfield retain 100 per cent records in Division 1 West

Many teams kicked off competitive action for the first time in 18 months at the weekend

Like many clubs, Leek are already making preparations for the 2021/22 season

Stoke-on-Trent Rugby Club retained second place in Midlands Division 1 West after beating Worcester away from home at the weekend.

Stoke defeated their opponents 37-24, meaning they have won all four of their opening fixtures.

Lichfield have also won all of their matches, albeit have played a game less.

They sit third after trouncing Droitwich 41-17 on their own patch.

In the Premier Division, Burton fell to a 54-26 loss away at Bridgenorth.

Alfie Grant and James Davies both scored two tries apiece but couldn’t prevent their team from falling to defeat.

They have won just one of their first four fixtures of the 2021/22 season.

Friday saw Longton beat Stafford 23-10 in a Staffordshire derby in the Division 2 West (North), Grant Hallam being one of the home side’s try scorers.

Henry Knox bagged a hat-trick of tries for Uttoxeter in their 38-24 loss to Crewe & Nantwich in the same division.

Meanwhile, Leek beat Tamworth in another county derby, triumphing 36-14.

Big wins and hard defeats

In Division 3 West (North), Eccleshall started their season with a 6-27 defeat to Harborne.

In Division 4 West (North), Barton-under-Needwood thrashed Wednesbury 48-3 in a heated affair.

Kieran Hall notched three tries while Tom Cooper, Kieran Thomas, Will Bagnall, Sam Willets and Alex Gray all managed to run over.

Trentham shared a 31-all draw with Market Drayton while Rugeley fell to a 45-28 loss against Oswestry.

Cannock recorded an opening day victory against Keresley, earning a 31-0 victory in Division 5 West (South).

Finally, Stone fell to a heavy 59-7 loss to Birmingham & Solihull in the same division, Brad Till getting their sole try.
