A brand new youth darts academy is to be established in Staffordshire later this year.
There are only a handful of such set-ups for youngsters around the country, one being Staffordshire Darts Academy in Stafford.
Many young darts players from Stoke have had to travel some distance to join an academy but now a new option is on the horizon.
Shaun Rogers from Eaton Park hopes to open the Darts In Stoke Academy later this year once he has completed his Junior Darts Corporation (JDC) accreditation in July.
A darts enthusiast, he once played with the legendary Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor.
He set up and runs the ‘Darts in Stoke’ website, which informs people about where and when leagues and tournaments are taking place amongst other information.
Shaun was about to establish the academy last year before the pandemic knocked back his plans.
However, with light at the end of the post-lockdown tunnel, the marketing business owner is gearing up to finally open the academy.
He explained to Sport in Staffs his reasons for starting the academy and his hopes for it.
“There are no junior leagues in the area, which is something I’ve always tried to look at doing,” he said.
“The big one we want to achieve with the academy is to produce a player that comes through the academy from age of ten up to 17/18 and then goes into the PDC (Professional Darts Corporation) Q-School and wins a tour card.
“That’s ultimate aim for all darts players really. It’s about preparing these lads and girls to go and play darts in venues and events and hopefully go to the PDC.”
Darts academy venues and opening date
The academy hopes to run at two venues; Longton Snooker & Pool Club and the clubhouse of Newcastle Town Football Club, where Shaun helps to run digital content.
It will invite those aged between eight to 18 to walk up to the oche and hone their skills.
Although a specific date has not been set amid the pandemic, the academy is aiming to open by August.
